Overview
In an ongoing effort to help protect members of the campus community from email phishing scams, emails originating from outside of RPI will have the term [EXTERNAL] at the beginning of the subject line.
Details
If you receive an email message that appears to be from someone you know or recognize from RPI but which has been tagged as being from an [EXTERNAL] source, this should be cause for concern and further scrutiny.
Note that most email from trusted partners will not be tagged. For example, email from our Help Desk system, which originates from off campus, will not be tagged as [EXTERNAL]. DotCIO will consider additional requests for exceptions from this tagging policy on a case-by-case basis for enterprise services that originate from a trusted source and where this is technically feasible.
Requesting an exception from the [EXTERNAL] flag:
Please submit a Support Request including the below information:
- This must be a campus service that went through the normal procurement process and is sending email as part of the service to campus community members. Please provide the service name and if known the service owner at Rensselaer.
- Enough information to find a recent (within 7 days) example, such as From, Subject, Recipient.
