Overview
Globus provides a secure, unified interface to your research data. Use Globus to 'fire and forget' high-performance data transfers between systems within and across organizations. Globus is particularly suited to transferring the GB and TB sized data sets used by researchers.
Rensselaer has a subscription to Globus to allow our community to use enhanced capabilities beyond the free tier. An overview of what we get with our subscription can be found at https://www.globus.org/why-subscribe
Usage
Members of the RPI community can access Globus via the web portal at https://app.globus.org/ . Login using "Use your existing organizational login" and select "Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute" , this will use our single sign-on system to authenticate you.
Globus Connect Personal endpoints
While files can be moved using a browser, for the best performance you should install a Globus Connect Personal Endpoint on your computer(s) . Instructions can be found at https://docs.globus.org/how-to/ .
A key benefit of our subscription is that it provides access to "Globus Plus". This enables "enhanced features" on your "Globus Connect Personal endpoints".
- Share files between two personal endpoints
- Share files FROM your personal endpoint
A full description of the "enhanced features" can be found at https://docs.globus.org/faq/subscriptions/#what_is_globus_plus_and_how_do_i_get_globus_plus .
To enable "Globus Plus" in your account go to settings and select "Globus Plus". Then click "Select a Globus Plus sponsor" and search for Rensselaer. Once your sponsorship is approved you can begin utilizing these new features.
Future usage
Longer term we are working to deploy managed data transfer nodes at key locations, such as CCI, to facilitate data movement. This will enable streamlined and automated data transfers to these platforms. Additionally Globus can provide for advanced data movement and processing pipelines, see https://www.globus.org/automation for an overview.
