Course-Level Gradebook Options
Gradebook Settings is where instructors can review course-level grading options. These settings may affect how grades are organized, displayed, calculated, or connected to student progress signals.
Open Gradebook Settings
To open Gradebook Settings:
- Open the course Gradebook.
- Select the Settings icon in the upper-right corner.
Review the Available Settings
The exact options may vary based on your role, course configuration, and institution settings. Gradebook Settings may include:
- Student display options - Control how student names or identification information appear in the Gradebook.
- Gradebook Upload/Download - Provide options for uploading or downloading Gradebook data.
- Grade schemas - Control how numeric results are displayed, such as percentages, points, or letter grades.
- Student performance - Defines conditions that can help identify patterns involving overall grade, missed due dates, or inactivity.
- Automatic zeros - Controls whether zeros are assigned automatically after eligible due dates.
- Overall grade - Provides access to the course’s overall-grade setup when it is used.
- Grade categories - Organize similar types of graded work and may support grade calculations.
Some settings affect only how instructors organize or view information. Others may affect grade calculations, student visibility, or course activity alerts. Review a settings purpose before changing it.
Review Performance and Activity Connections
Student Performance settings can define alert conditions based on information such as:
- Overall grade.
- Missed due dates.
- Days since last access or inactivity.
These conditions may appear in Course Activity and help notice patterns that warrant closer review. An alert identifies a condition; it does not explain why the pattern occurred.
Adjust Settings With Care
Before changing a Gradebook setting, ask:
- Does the change match the course grading plan?
- Does it agree with the syllabus and student-facing instructions?
- Could it affect existing grades or what students see?
- Does institutional guidance apply?
- Do other instructors or course leaders need to be consulted?
If you are uncertain about a setting that affects calculations, visibility, automatic zeros, or uploaded grade data, review institutional guidance before making the change.
