Network Settings for Windows and Linux

Overview

Finding Your Network Settings

The information below is designed to help troubleshoot network problems. Anytime you need to contact the Help Desk with a networking problem please include the following information:

• RCS User ID
• Internet Connection (Dial-up, Ethernet, RoadRunner, etc.)
• Where You are Located
• IP Address
• Physical (MAC) Address (not your location)
• Subnet Mask
• Default Gateway
• DHCP Server
• DNS Servers
• Wins Server 

Procedures

Windows

1. Press the windows button  on the keyboard, type cmd, press Enter

1. Type ipconfig /all
   
   

[ipconfig / all window showing system32 settings]

Linux

1. Open a Terminal
2. Type /sbin/ifconfig , this will list your IP address as well your physical (MAC) address
3. Type cat /etc/resolv.conf , this will display the DNS servers
