Overview
Once videos have been uploaded to MyMediasite, they can be shared with viewers either singly, or grouped in a channel. Collecting videos on a single topic into a channel simplifies the sharing process: a channel can either be shared with a single link, or embedded into another site. Videos can be added or removed at any time.
All MyMediasite users have the capability to create, collaborate on, and share their own channels within MyMediasite. However, if channel content needs to remain in use beyond an individual's time at Rensselaer, please file a support request to request that Multimedia Services create a centrally located shared channel for collaborative material.
Procedures
In order to share a collection of videos using a channel, you will need to complete the following steps.
Create a New Channel
- Navigate to the My Mediasite portal. If you have not already logged in, do so using your RCSID and password.
- Click Browse Channels on the left-hand menu.
[Image shows the left hand menu on the MyMediasite page. An arrow points to the Browse Channels option.]
- On the Browse Channels page, click the Add Channel button on the right to create a new channel.
[The image shows the upper right section of the MyMediasite screen, on the Browse Channels page. A red arrow points to the Add Channel button in the upper right of the page.]
- The Create a New Channel page will be displayed. Fill in all information, then click the Create Channel button to save it. For a complete and detailed explanation of all fields and information, please see the Mediasite documentation for creating a new channel.

Set Security on a Channel
Once the channel has been created, it will appear in the Browse Channels page. If you click on the name of the channel, it will open and allow you to mark it as a favorite it, edit it, adjust security for it, and share the channel to other users for viewing.
[Image shows the My Channel page with a summary of information about the channel. Arrows point to the Edit button (second from the left), Favorite (star in the upper right), and Security (fourth button from the left).]
Default security for all new channels created is locked to viewing by any Authenticated User within the Rensselaer community. If the security is not edited, then any member of the community, with the shared link for the channel, will be able to view the channel.
If a channel needs to be locked to a small group of users, follow the procedure below.
- Click the Security button to set security.
- At the top, click the checkbox for "Propagate permissions to child objects" to ensure that all video presentations within the channel share the same security as the channel itself.
[Image shows the top of the Security page, with a red arrow pointing to a checkbox labeled "Propagate permissions to child objects."]
- To remove permissions for the Rensselaer community as a whole, click on the drop down box to the right of AuthenticatedUsers, then select Remove.
- To add select users, scroll down to the bottom. First select the Search Method, then start typing a name and from the list of suggestions provided, click to select the name you want.
[Image shows the bottom of the Security page, with a snippet of the Add people of groups section. Arrows point to a portion of a name typed (allend) and the suggestion of "Deb Allen" whose RCSID matches the search term. The search method is also highlighted, showing options for "By Names Starting With" and "By Names Containing".]
- Click Add to save the name, then repeat for any additional names required.
[Image shows the same Add people or groups section, with a red arrow pointing to the Add button, and the search term replaced by the name of the person being added.]
- If you wish to collaborate with someone on the channel, you can change the security level from Read Only to Writer, which will allow the selected person to work with you in the channel.

Add Presentations to a Channel
You can add any of your own presentations to a channel.
- Navigate to the My Mediasite portal. If you have not already logged in, do so using your RCSID and password.
- Click on My Presentations to show your list of presentations, then click the title of a presentation to open the summary.
[Image shows a section of the My Presentations page. A red arrow points to the "My Presentations" option on the left-hand menu of MyMediasite, and another red arrow points to the title of a presentation.]
- In the right hand menu, click Move To.
[Image shows a portion of the Presentation summary page. On the right-hand menu, next to the image for the presentation, a red arrow points to the menu option Move To.]
- Select the option to Place this Presentation in a Channel. The list of channels you have access to will be displayed (including any channels which have been shared to you). Select the channel, then click the Move Presentation button at the bottom right.
[Image shows the Move Presentation dialog box. A red arrow points to the selection option "Place this Presentation in a Channel." Below that, under the displayed Search for Channels option, a red arrow points to a selected channel, and another red arrow points to the Move Presentation button in the lower right corner of the dialog box.]
- The presentation will be moved to the channel. PLEASE NOTE: the security for the presentation will not be updated on move, so please ensure that security is set for your presentation (it is not locked, or not viewable) so that it will properly appear in a channel.
Timed Video Release Using a Channel
If you wish to create a channel, but have videos release on a schedule, you can place all videos in the channel, and leave them as private, and then mark videos as viewable according to your own timing.
- When viewing the video summary, make sure the videos are marked as Who can View? being Only Me.
[Image shows the Who Can View? menu on the right of a presentation summary page. The slider is all the way at the bottom, with an arrow pointing to the "Only Me" option.]
- In order to release a video, adjust the slider for that video to point to My Organization and then authenticated users will be able to view the video.
[Image shows the Who can View? menu on the right of a presentation summary page. The slider is at the second option, with an arrow pointing to the label "My Organization".]
Share the Channel
A channel may be shared directly by providing a direct link or QR code, or by embedding it into an LMS page. A channel should never be shared by using the MyMediasite link from the browser.
- While viewing the summary for your channel, click the Share button.
[Image shows the top menu on a channel summary page. A red arrow points to the rightmost button, Share.]
- To share directly, copy either the Channel URL or the QR Code to provide a link directly to the viewable channel in Mediasite. Please note that security on the channel must be set to allow either specific users, Authenticated Users, or Everyone to view the channel.
[Image shows the sharing options for a course, after the Share button has been selected. Red arrows point to the Copy button for the Channel URL and to the available QR Code.]
- To share your link in an LMS course, please see the LMS specific documentation for sharing a channel (LMS: Adding Mediasite Content to a Blackboard Course).
