Anti-Virus software recommendations for personal devices, including laptops purchased by students through the mobile computing program.
Details
- Windows systems come with an antivirus product named Windows Defender. It is free to use for all. Other products are available and may come in both free and subscription versions with different feature sets. (Generally, the free versions are strictly for personal use, so use by Rensselaer employees would not be allowed, even on a personally-owned device.) Products include the following:

- Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition – available for Windows, MacOS, and Android. A subscription version is available with additional features.
- Sophos A/V Free Home Edition – available for Windows and MacOS. May be used by students, but may not be used by employees, even on personal devices if used for Rensselaer purposes. A subscription version is available with additional features.
- Malwarebytes – available for Windows. Free edition available to students, but not for employees, even on personal devices if used for Rensselaer purposes. A subscription version is available with additional features.
