Overview
Security settings do not allow auto forwarding all email to an external email address. Exchange Online has a large quota, security handled by Duo-authentication (no longer require connection to RPI network including VPN when off-campus), and a robust web interface negates the need to forward email.
Details
Email forwarding rules are disabled for security reasons:
- For faculty and staff, only Rensselaer email accounts may be used by Rensselaer personnel when conducting Institute business, which includes, among other things, teaching and research. Individual employees, departments, and other campus units may not create and use their own alternate email accounts.
- Cybercriminals, if successful, can setup an auto-forward rule creating Business Email Compromise (BEC). If done and auto-forwarding is enabled, this may not be detected immediately.
Rule creation:
- While it is possible to setup a rule to auto-forward or configure forward settings in Outlook Web Access and save these settings it will not work and result in undeliverable email.
- If you were forwarding your email on Webmail (IMAP), once your email is moved to Exchange Online this forwarding is removed.
